A Conversation With Suz

You: Gosh, is it true that ARTitude Zine is going out of business?

Me: Not exactly. :) I am taking a break from publishing the print zine after Issue #27 comes out. The website will still be here (and will be updated a LOT more frequently, since I will have time to do so!) and I will be working on bringing you interesting stuff in a new format for a while.

You: How long will this hiatus last?

Me: Maybe several months, probably more like a year. Let’s face it, I’m tired and it’s grueling to maintain the quarterly pace while also holding down a demanding “real” job and having any semblance of a personal life. :) I need to think about other things for a while.

You: What about my subscription? Don’t you owe me some more zines?

Me: Um, I don’t think so, but if you think so, please contact me. If your subscription was to include an Issue #28, I already mailed you a juicy little collage pack as a replacement for that issue, which will not be published. If you think your subscription runs through #28 and you have not received a collage pack, please let me know.

You: I think my subscription ran out, and I definitely want to get the final issues. What should I do?

Me: Just send me an email. I can look you up in the database to see what you’ve missed, and together we can figure out how to complete your collection.

You: Will I still be able to buy back issues?

Me: Yes! The website and its shopping cart will remain active so you can order all the back issues your little heart desires! The only ones that are sold out are Issue #1, Issue #2, Issue #3 and Issue #4. We are getting low on #9 and #23, and Issues #25 through #27 will be printed in small quantities as limited editions so reserve them now if you want them...

You: Why did you decide to take a break now?

Me: Lots of reasons. For one thing, I truly need some time to rest and regroup. There are a million creative ideas in my head but I never get to play around with them because there are always orders to ship and pages to lay out and ad space to fill and bills to pay and yada yada yada. Now I will have a chance to try something new.

Also, it seems like there are a zillion publications out there now, whereas back in 2001 when ARTitude Zine arrived on the scene, there were fewer other magazines competing for the same readers, artwork and dollars. In a world where Stampington publishes a glossy special-topic magazine on every conceivable special topic, how can a little zine like ARTitude stay afloat? I wish I knew. It’s frustrating because I think the zine keeps getting better and better all the time, but fewer and fewer people have been contributing their artwork to it because they prefer to be published in big-name magazines. And I can’t say I blame them! ARTitude Zine was founded, in part, to provide a way for more people to share their artwork with the world. These days, it is so much easier to get your work into the public eye via the multitude of publications and the internet. It may be that ARTitude has simply outlived its usefulness. Sigh! But don’t worry. It may return someday with a revised agenda and a refreshed voice. We shall see!

You: I will miss ARTitude Zine.

Me: Me too! Believe me, nobody will miss it more than I. But I realized earlier this year that letting it go is the right thing to do right now.

I’ve read that, every seven years, our bodies have replaced every cell at least once. That means (literally!) that you and I are completely different people today than we were seven years ago when ARTitude was born. We’ve come full circle. We’ve learned so much! We’ve gained a lot of confidence. We’ve discovered new avenues for expression. We’ve enjoyed being a part of this dynamic community of creative souls, and I like to think that that community is not going away.

Thank you for your enthusiasm, encouragement, inspiration and participation over the years. It’s been a blast! Keep in touch, will ya? I am so proud of all of us. :)

XO
